　　影片改编自美国作家苏珊·柯林斯同名三部曲中的第一部（其余两部分别名为《火星燎原 Catching Fire》和《自由梦幻 Mockingjay》），讲述了一个“残忍”的故事。故事本身像极了日本电影“大逃杀”，但是在柯林斯的心中，《饥饿游戏》却是希腊神话的现代改编。她说：“这个故事从忒修斯和牛头怪的传说衍生而来。我在八岁的时候读到了这个故事，从此之后，这个故事便在我的心中扎了根。在那个故事里，有一个叫做克里特岛的地方，每一年，人们都会送去七个童男童女，献给牛头怪。在我的小说中，我并不想写一个一样的神话故事，所以我把故事安排在了未来的被毁灭的美洲，用当代人的视角和价值观创作了《饥饿游戏》。故事里的卡特尼丝就是忒修斯，牛头怪，被升级成了政府和那种无形的体制与压力。究其故事本身来说，这就是最简单的古罗马的角斗士的故事，加上的现代的内容而已。”
　　影片的导演是加里·罗斯，他却凭借着自己的私人关系，拉来了著名导演史蒂文·索德伯格做第二导演，专门拍摄动作戏。对于此，索德伯格说：“过程很简单，（2011年）4月份，加里·罗斯打电话来说，8月份的第一个星期，他准备让影片的第二导演组开始工作，他问我是不是有空来帮帮他。他说，因为我是与之熟悉的朋友，对我很了解，来找我总比找那些他不认识的导演要放心。加里·罗斯和我的确是多年的好朋友，我们曾经不间断地合作了15年，于是我就说，好的，没问题。那时候，我刚刚完成了《传染病》，正在为《魔力麦克》做准备。我想去拍拍这部电影肯定会挺好玩，于是就答应了。对于我来说，我的工作就是去辅佐加里·罗斯完成影片，我要尽可能地区模仿并复制他和汤姆·斯特恩（影片摄影师）的工作。并且尽量把他们的风格模仿的惟妙惟肖。我想要做到的，如果我的工作做的还不错－－最好的结果是你看不出来影片中的哪一部分是我执导的，因为一部电影是一个整体。其实，这也就是加里·罗斯找我来做第二导演的原因，因为他知道我是一个严格的人，肯定会把自己的部分拍摄得和他的风格一样。”

　　被业内人士视为“第二部《暮色》”的《饥饿游戏》主打年轻演员这张牌，在影片中扮演主角的是詹妮弗·劳伦斯、乔什·哈切森与利亚姆·海姆斯沃斯这三位新生代明星。对于自己手中的演员，加里·罗斯非常满意，他说：“这群年轻的演员非常具有创造力，而且，他们在片中的表现着实令我吃惊，尤其是詹妮弗·劳伦斯的表演，沉静自然、又具有爆发力。几年前，当我看了《冬天的骨头》之后，我就被这个新面孔吸引住了，因为她的确具有一流演员的才华，能提供出令人信服的表演。后来，我和她见了一面，发现她是一个非常具有可塑性的演员，于是便把她带到了剧组里。其他的几位主演也是如此，都是我在看过他们的电影之后，才确定要的演员。”
　　这些主演，已经二十出头了，对于小说里的设定，他们的实际年龄偏大。这种年龄上的差距，是不是会给表演以及影片带来“困扰”呢？加里·罗斯说：“关于这个问题，我和苏珊·柯林斯讨论过，而且她也看了每个演员的试镜经过。她对詹妮弗·劳伦斯的年龄还是有一点看法的。但是关键在于，既要能表现出小说中对这个人物的描绘，又要是十几岁的年龄，这样的演员，几乎是无法寻找的。从目前的情况来看，没有人能在表演水平、外貌特点和票房号召力上比詹妮弗·劳伦斯更适合这个角色了。其实，在苏珊的设置和我的感觉中，卡特尼丝并不是一个年轻的女孩，而是一个年轻的女人。而詹妮弗·劳伦斯恰好就能把这一切诠释出来。”
