要把韩赛尔与格蕾特搬到大银幕上，并让观众产生欣赏的欲望，维尔科拉知道必须要找到两位有人气的演员。于是，在制片公司的帮扶下，杰瑞米·雷纳走进了维尔科拉的视线。很快，看完剧本的杰瑞米·雷纳就加入了剧组。雷纳说：“我看完剧本的第一个念头就是，天哪，这么一个本子居然没有开拍。这个故事是在是太牛了，而且其中的种种魔幻的元素也非常时髦。这些还不是重点，整个剧本里最大的重点就是这样一种兄妹情－－维尔科拉为这种情感的表达留下了大量的空间，这为这部电影在情感戏上做足了文章。”而女演员的选择则没有这么顺利了，在接连试镜了好几位一线女星之后，维尔科拉才敲定了曾经出演过《007：大破量子危机》的英伦女星杰玛·阿特登。阿特登说：“这个故事我从小就听过了很多遍，而现在这个‘续集’的确也很让我着迷。这个故事里有很多元素，那些中世纪的巫术、妖术混搭现代武器的感觉，也很令人惊喜。而且，故事中总有一种令人紧张的气氛，我觉得这会是一部好电影，所以就来到了这个剧组。”
对于自己的演员，维尔科拉很满意，因为这两个演员的组合，足以打动很多影迷了。他说：“其实，这部电影最大的关键点就在演员身上，只要找对了演员，这部电影就算成功了一半。这几年因为出演动作片而广为人知的雷纳为了这部电影还是做了不少的训练；而杰玛·阿特登也是一样，他们都为了片中的动作场面做了不少的训练。因为片中还有不少镜头不能用CG制作，而需要演员亲自上场表演，这些镜头有的比较危险，大多数都很令人劳累。而且我们还有NG。不过，这两个主角并没有因此而抱怨什么，能找到这么一个组合，我是很幸运的。”
